    A quick Jim update

I was told I needed to make a new post to keep this thing alive, so here it is.
Bigbigbig changes since last November, that's for sure.
I've been kicking ass at FSC, quit Circuit City a couple months ago, and moved to Stoneham with Katie! I've also picked up a new 2nd job (yeah, still at PLACES for now) as a waiter at On The Border in Woburn. It's a chain Mexican restaurant, but the food's pretty good and it's busy 99% of the time so the money's been acceptable.
    Woot.
Our new apartment rocks. It's more in rent, but heat's included and we're saving a bunch of money on our other utilities because this place isn't a drafty old shack. All in all I'm totally glad we made the move.
As far as games are concerned, I haven't had a lot of time to play stuff, but I've found nuggets of time here & there, so I'll spout off a few recommendations:
    Wii: Smash Bros Brawl. Totally.
PS2: Shadow of the Colossus is insanely awesome and must be played. Unbelievably cool boss fights. I don't know how I overlooked it for so long.
DS: Finished Phoenix Wright 3. Probably the best of the series too... the final case was so full of twists! I'm starting up Appollo Justice now, but haven't gotten through the 1st case yet. So far it seems interesting.
PC: BIOSHOCK. 'nuff said. Also got Orange Box for xmas... HL2: Ep 2 and Portal were both great and left me wanting more.
Things have been insanely busy for me these last 6 months or so, but life is pretty darn good on the whole. It's nice living in civilization again.

    Life, anyone?

Well well well, happy turkey day to you all! Hopefully everyone's holiday will be juicy and delicious with a hint of crispy skin! Don't ask me what that's supposed to mean.
So, the last few weeks have been pretty busy, and the next few will probably be just as, if not more busy! You see, in addition to school and working at PLACES, I've taken up a second job, at... wait for it... Circuit City. Oh yes, I know. Home of the infamous comment. I'm at least not working in customer service this time; I'm selling cameras & camcorders! I started out pretty sucky at it but I'm getting better by the day and things aren't quite so bad. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still a retail job, and there's still some people that I don't really like at all, but it seems to be working for the time being. I'll be working from 4:30am to 6:00pm on Black friday, so that'll be a riot... No, literally, it will probably be a riot. I'm looking forward to it.
School's going well; I'm in a "too many papers assigned at once" phase, so I'm trying to whittle away at them gradually to try and prevent any all-nighters. Those suck when you're used to going to bed at 11:00. Hopefully some of my Feature Writing stories will be published somewhere in some paper; so if and when that happens, you can all bet your arses I'll be telling you all about it!
Also, I don't think I've elaborated on my computer drama that's been going on the last 2 months and has finally come to a sound conclusion. So, my old computer Bessie (It was a Gateway so I had to give her a cow's name) had gotten this problem of randomly shutting off completely. Probably something to do with the processor not being cooled properly. So I brought it to Best buy since my warranty was still valid, and they shipped it out to be fixed. I get it back 2 weeks later, and it's still not fixed. So I back up my files, do a system restore like they wanted (even though it had nothing to do with any sort of software; it was a hardware problem), and brought it back, again. It comes back a week later, and surprise surprise, it's not working still! They say "come in and we'll give you a new machine". I'm thinking "sweet". I go in, and they bring me over and give me what they say is a "comparable model", which means shittier specs and runs like crap. I get it home and realize just how godawful of a machine it was (I had programs freezing on me minutes after I started it up for the first time), so a day or two later, I go back with Katie. I say "this machine's not as good as the one I had before; I want a different one." I'm all nice about it (read as: quiet and passive), and Katie, the awesome Katie, opens up a can of worms on BB, and long story short, I get a brand new computer that's way mre awesome than my last one, a 3-year warranty, AND $214 BACK. Man, it's awesome having a girlfriend who knows how to work the system for all it's worth. She was slick, too, you all should have seen it. So, for you geeks, here's my new comp's specs:
HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook w/17" widescreen (Aptly named "BEAST")
Intel Core 2 Duo @1.5 ghz (the only part I wish were a little higher, but still plays Half-Life 2 with flying colors)
    2 gigs RAM
256 MB Dedicated (not shared) NVidia Video card
    240 gig Hard Drive
    DVD burner w/LightScribe
TV Tuner & Windows Media Center (niiiice)
aaaand... a NUMBER PAD. Fuck yeah.
Needless to say, I'm happy with my new computer. Woot.
Also, Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii is the best mario game since Mario 64. Maybe even better. There, I SAID IT. Arguments welcome.
That concludes this episode... speaking of, this writer's strike sucks. No new season of 24, and The Office is already in repeats as of this week? That's lame, Hollywood. Really lame.

    The worst movie ever.

The other night, Katie and I sat down and watched a movie from our Blockbuster Online qeue (yeah, that was a shameless plug). In typical BBO fashion, it was a movie we never saw but didn't want to pay to see, and this movie was "Babe: Pig in the City", the sequel to the Best Picture nominee of 1996. We didn't know a whole lot about it, aside form it getting mixed reviews and Katie's niece being afraid of movies for a couple years afterwards (which should be a pretty big red flag there). We sat down and watched it, and the whole time, I had one thign going through my mind:
"What the hell is wrong with this movie?!"
Now before you all go and say, "but Jim, it's a kid's movie! Of course it sucks! LOL!", let me assure you that although it was marketed as such, this movie is so far from the 'kid's movie' mark, it's that dart I threw at The Spoke that didn't just miss by going below the dartboard, but through the hole in the wall below the dartboard and into the beer storage room. It's that far from ANY mark.
First, this film is chock full of things that kids shouldn't be seeing and in some cases, hearing. Some things will scare the ever-loving crap out of them (like a  prolonged scene of a dog hanging in water and almost drowning), while other scenes mention cavity searches by the DEA at the airport. In one other scene where dogs are arguing with cats, the dog says something along the line of "Shut up, you pussy!", and while I'm one of the most freedom of speech-loving individuals you'll find, I'm really surprised they let that line stay in there, regardless of the technicality that he's addressing a cat.
Another aspect that should be touched upon is the fact that it doesn't take place in a "real" city, but rather a distorted amalgamation of every major city, along with everything that's wrong with cities. In one scene, the titular porker looks out a window, and in his view you can see (including, but not limited to): The Golden Gate Bridge, the "Hollywood" sign, the Space Needle, and probably a dozen other landmarks I'm missing, not to mention most of the streets shown are Venetian canals. One could probably say they're going for an "Anycity" kind of storybook thing, or you could also say it was cheaper to build a freakish set and shoot in a studio. Maybe both. Who knows?
On another note, the film also consistently misses the humor mark as well. There aren't really very many funny situations at all in the movie, and the one-liners didn't really have much wit behind their writing. The other type of humor they go for it the "old lady bouncing around with giant inflated pants while animals make a mess at the fancy dinner" kind of humor, which I don't even have to explain any further.
I could probably go on longer (and maybe I'll edit this post at a later date), but my lunch break is done.
So, to sum this up nicely: "Babe: Pig in the City" is a travesty of film that is not suitable for kids, not funny enough for adults, and to be brutally honest, only kept my (and Katie's) attention for the sheer aspect of wondering how much worse it could possibly get.
To be honest, as horrible as this movie is, I really think everybody should see it, and I would hope some film class somewhere shows it as an example of truly BAD filmmaking. Now I know why I hadn't seen James Cromwell in anything between that movie and this past season of "24" (which by the way, he did a great job in as Jack's father).
    Until next time,
    -Jim

    WHOAH! NEW POST!

I'm not really sleepy right now so I'm gonna talk about things I think you should know.

First off, I went to Acadia National Park with Katie last week. It was an amazing time. Ususally I get bored after just 2 or 3 days of camping, but we were there a good 5 days and I feel like I could have stayed there forever! It was such a beautiful area of the country, even if the ocean water's even colder than Hampton Beach! We hiked up Gorham Mountain one day (the way we took was about 4 miles round trip, +545 vertical ft.), and the next day we hiked up Cadillac Mountain (just about 9 miles round trip, plus over 1,500 vertical ft!). My only real complaint would be the obnoxious guy who started yelling across the campground at 11:00 pm and caused me to miss sleep one night. Jerk. I also got myself a lobster dinner one night, and came to the conclusion that while the meat was fairly tasty, if I'm gonna pay $30 for a meal, I don't want to have to perform intensive manual labor to eat it! Although on the humorous side, I creeped out some young girls when I was dismantling my lobster.

Mexican chocolate ice cream and Lemon Lemongrass sorbets are both indescribably delicious, as are Bar Harbor Brewery's ales (especially the Peach & Thunder Hole ales!), so if you're ever in the Mount Desert Island/Acadia region, I strongly advise you to seek them both out! BHB does free tours & tastings daily, too.

I've been reading "The Catcher In The Rye" over the last week since it seems I'm probably the only person who graduated high school without reading it, and I must say it's really interesting so far. Holden Caulfield's quite the character. He reminds me of like, 5 people I know too, which probably isn't good.

It was a big week for CDs this week too; since probably my all-time favorite band ever, Reel Big Fish came out with a great new album, as did one of the original "real punk bands", Bad Religion. Both are awesome albums, RBF's is very slapstick-ey ska goodness, and BR is really hard, heavy, angry type punk. Check 'em out!

I think I'm gonna read and fall asleep now. Woo!

Anybody still read this one? No? Oh well.

I have one of each of my 3 classes left to go to, and then my 3 finals, and guess what? I'll FINALLY have a fucking Associate's Degree. Woopty woop. Nothing like 4 and a half years of off-and-on school to get a 2-year degree, eh? I'm trying to get into Emerson to get my Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism but I haven't heard back from them yet, plus my father is being a cock and refusing to fill out a required financial aid form, so that's probably gonna screw me over. Good thing I'm in at Fitchburg State as a backup. Gotta love joint admissions.

Once regular classes end, it'll be good to get a few weeks of full-time work in again, God knows I could use the money around here! This 3-ish day a week schedule just doesn't cut it for the long-term.

I have a lot more I could talk about, but I'm tired of talking for now. I know, I just started, but I'm old and tired, so this is all you get for now. I probably won't update this particular site by Christmas (what can I say, I know how I am), but maybe I'll do something on myspace. I don't know yet.

    Have a merry christmas!
